About the Event
What is Mediative Stitching? Per Donalee it’s the deliberate hand stitching of lovely small pieces of fabrics joined together to make a pleasing composition. And, there's no pressure on the outcome. Why do meditative stitching? To still your mind, to be absorbed in the lusciousness of the moment and the materials. You could use silk, linen, wool, hand-dyed cotton, ribbon, yarn, lace, or beads. Each small 4” composition tells a story and takes you on a journey. Donalee will address design principles and color theories related to the project.
Members are welcome to sew along if you'd like. If so, here's an optional supply list:
- Close-up magnification glasses, if needed
- Small hand scissors, embroidery thread, needles
- Camera (your smartphone will work fine)
- Sketchbook, pens
- Fabric--any vintage linens or hankies, special or unique fabrics, ribbons, yarn pieces from loved, worn garments
Donalee is known mostly for her textural and colorful fine art quilts for the wall. By working in an abstract improv style, she can build each piece with the heart of an artist and the skills a structural engineer might employ.
No matter what medium she works in, the result reflects her energetic enthusiasm and passion for abundant beauty. As Donalee builds a piece, she is also building the stories associated with the shapes and lines that come together to create the composition. She works until she's happy with the overall vision, which feels dynamic and engaging. No two pieces are ever alike.
Donalee was a jeweler for 25 years as the owner-operator of a successful retail and wholesale business based out of Bayfield, Wisconsin. Those experiences and practices carry forward into all her life and work efforts.
